  4. Tools for managing DNS domain zone settings: what to choose
Categories

One of the most frequent requests to technical support is a question about tools for configuring a DNS domain zone. And now, we are going to tell you about the types of instruments for managing domain zones settings.

Three main options for solving tasks

In general, much depends on software installed on a virtual machine:

  1. On servers with a control panel such as cPanel, Plesk, Webmin, ISPmanager, Vesta, etc., domain zone management is a built-in functionality and is often placed in a separate menu. We will not go into all the details of the settings for each panel but only consider the two most popular ones that our users use — the web interfaces of the ISPmanager Lite or Vesta control panels.

ISPmanager Lite is a popular dashboard for managing physical or virtual dedicated servers and creating websites. The solution also allows you to manage database servers, mail servers, and other programs using a web interface. Among a wide range of functions, this software product allows you to create web domains and personally manage them, as well as configure and manage DNS: create domain zones, edit various types of DNS records, etc.

As for the Vesta panel, this software is also popular and convenient. The solution also allows you to configure and edit DNS zones for a domain; there are other useful features such as working with a mail server and databases, managing, and creating new sites, and so on.

  1. Programs like PowerDNS or BIND.

If you do not use web hosting control panels, you can use specialized tools to manage software settings for managing domain zones. For example, install PowerDNS or BIND.

PowerDNS is one of the leading DNS server implementations that is open source and supported by UNIX systems. The program also has its own web interface for managing domain zone settings.

PowerDNS allows you to get information about DNS using various sources, including files, relational databases, and so on. Also, the program is often used for balancing DNS traffic of high-load sites.

To configure a DNS server, you can use BIND — one of the most widespread DNS server implementations. The software is primarily used on UNIX-based servers, but there are versions for Windows-based servers as well.

This program does not have its own web interface for managing domain zone settings. However, you can use additional software products instead, such as Bind DNS Server Web interface

DNS servers and domain zones settings in BIND are configured in a file named.conf. After editing the file and making all changes to it, the daemon named requires a reboot.

  1. Additional service TuchaHosting.

In addition to the panels and programs listed above, there is another convenient option for managing domain zone settings — ordering a separate additional service TuchaHosting. It involves providing DNS servers for hosting domain zones and managing them using a web interface.

Usually, when using a personal DNS server on a virtual machine, a domain only works on one DNS server unless a user takes care of the availability of additional ones. One of the main advantages of using the service TuchaHosting is that the domain is located on at least two DNS servers. It helps you achieve even more stable performance and improve fault tolerance.

Which method should I choose?

The method of managing domain zone settings depends entirely on the software used and the conditions of the specific task. If you do not want to leave your domain on a registrar's DNS servers (this feature is usually free), the most convenient, reliable, and easy way is to use the additional service TuchaHosting.

In the previous article about the DirectAdmin web hosting control panel, we gave a general overview of the system and its purpose. Now let us focus in more detail on the functions of the software product and the algorithm of actions that the user usually needs to do when working with the panel.

In this post, we would like to take a look at DirectAdmin, an open API system from Canadian developers JBMC Software. We will tell and visually show the main functions of the panel and how to work with it. So, we hope that those customers who have not yet dared to get rid of another russian software product, after reading this material, will have the opportunity to make sure that DirectAdmin is a worthy alternative to the tools they are currently using.

Transfer of accounting to the clouds is a proven way to ensure reliable remote work with programs and data. And so that the organization process does not turn into a task with several unknowns, we have collected in one article a selection of useful materials on this topic: from choosing a cloud provider to a stage of direct work with data on a server. Read, use and migrate confidently!

Uninterrupted and fast hosting is the key to a high-quality website and corporate mail operation. In most cases, shared hosting in the cloud with a high level of fault tolerance and at an affordable cost is the best way to do this.

We are now talking about another typical task — migration to the cloud of sites based on various CMS, particularly WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. And we do this on several real-life examples of our clients.
